Representation of men in music.
the male representation within the music industry is usually portrayed within music videos, it shows men as being dominant, wealthy and around women, this is mainly for R&B and Hip Hop, the other representation of men in music videos is Young, having fun and careless... this is represented a lot by boy bands such as the wanted, One direction and Union J.
These are the 2 different representations of men within the Pop music industry.

Layout for double page spread
My influence for the magazine doubler page spread has come mainly from Q magazine and Billboard as they have the same audience age. Although in the Billboard and Q magazine Double page spreads the left side will be completely for the Photo of the Artist and their name, I have decided to start the Interview at the bottom of the page.

Layout for the front cover of the music magazine
Music magazine front cover has not been fully taken by any magazine. The way the feature stories have been set out follows Billboard and Rolling Stone but the idea of 4 pictures for the main artist on a front cover is different I feel is would set my magazine apart from others. The place of the Title of the magazine follows all magazines including Kerrang, Billboard, Top of the Pops etc.. as it is the easiest place to see it.

music magazine front cover analysis
- The title of the music magazine is 'Billboard' once again this is covered up by the image on the front cover, and ocne again it will not effect the sales as it is well known and people can tell what it says.
- The image on the front cover is of Katy Perry, which will attract lots of people as she is very famous and has a large fan base. The image takes up about half a page which is good as it makes it stand out more.
- There are many feature stories on the magazine 'Sheryl Crow, retire sound, modern marketing plan', 'Can Taylor Swift's Q4 album debut with a million sold?', 'Mike Posner: from Itunes U to the top 10' , 'Chart dent, Jarrod Niemann, Newsboys, Eminem, Sting', all of these feature stories attract readers as they are all known names and have large fan bases. next to Katy Perry's image on the left it says in large 'Katy Perry, inside the court of the new queen of pop' this tells you there is some sort of interview inside about Katy Perry making you want to buy it. Other feature stories include, 'The mercury prize eyes a bounce-back year' and 'Making money from facebook social games'.
- The colour scheme on this front cover is not as basic as on the other two, and less effective. The background colour is pink, the title is in Black with yellow and blue and all other writing is in black, white and yellow. There is also a feature sory with a orange circle around it which clashes with the rest of the cover. There aim was to get the front cover colours to go with Katy Perrys dress, however i think it all clashes and takes attention away from the image, it should be more basic.
music magazine front cover analysis
- The name of the music magazine is 'Rolling Stone' although this is covered up by the picture. However this is not too bad for the magazine as Rolling Stone is well known and even with most of it covered most people know which magazine it is.
- The picture on the front cover is of Jay Z, it is large and takes up most of the front cover, the image itself is a close up of him. This works in the magazines favour as Jay Z is well known and people are more likely to buy it.
- The feature stories on the magazine are 'The best albums and songs of 2012', 'The 50 greatest hip-hop songs of all time' which is good because it mixes contemporary with classical, and so everyone is pleased. Other feature stories are 'Will Obama try to kill legal pot?' and 'Secrets of 'The Hobbit'' both bringing in different audiences, whether you are a weed fanatic or a fan of 'The Hobbit' you are more likely to buy the magazine.
- The colour scheme on the front cover is like Kerrangs colour scheme, basic and effective. The title is in red, with everything else being in black and white with a hint of yellow. This works as it gives attention towards the image of Jay Z.
music magazine front cover analysis
- The music magazine is called kerrang, which is a well known music magazine within the UK. The title 'Kerrang' is written in at the top in large, black bold writing all in capitals. making it stand out to people looking at magazine stands, or those who are already searching for it.
- The main picture on the magazine is of the well known band in the UK Paramore with writing under it in large saying 'Paramore, Souvenir special'. This brings in more buyers as fans of the band are more likely to buy the magazine.
- The features are at the bottom of the page in small, they include 'band profiles', 'singles and albums' and 'Hayley speaks!'. leaving them at the bottom of the page is a mistake, especially 'Hayley speaks' as her fans will want to know if she is just on the front cover or if she has an interview inside the magazine aswell.
- Other things that are written on the front cover are '2 Giant posters +22 more insise' this is effective in making people buy it as it is at the top of the page and easy to see. Also written is 'Plus 45 stickers' which is also effective in making people buy it, aswell as 'Paramore special issue' and the barcode.
- other photos on the magazine are all of Paramore, 3 to the left side and 3 to the bottom, this really emphasises to fans that the whole issue is on Paramore which will make them want to buy it.
- The colour scheme on the front cover is basic but effective it is mostly black and white, with some red and yellow. everything stands out and none of the colours clash, so the colour scheme works.

Audience research of music magazines
There are many music genres that people are into, for example: Rock, Punk, Hip Hop, Rap, R&B, Country, Jazz, Pop, Reggae etc.
People who are into Hip Hop will most likely also be into Rap, and people into Pop will also most likely be into R&B, this makes it easier for music magazines to appeal to a larger audience because they can use more than one music genre. Music magazines such as BillBoard and Q magazine do this and do not focus on any one genre and so can appeal to the masses.
Some music magazines such as Kerrang focus on niche markets. Kerrang focuses on rock music, but is also a very succesful magazine because it has a well known name and advertises itself well with top rock bands and artists on the front of there magazines to lure the audience in.
The audience for music magazines is falling and has been for the last decade. With the ease of access to the internet in modern day people are able to access information on their favourite artists, songs and genres with the press of a button. Almost all music magazines will now have a website, which contains photos and columns from the magazine, and with websites such as digitalspy people are able to access celebrity gossip and the latest news about artists for free. This has become even worse over the last few years with the increase in smartphones and tablets, people are now able to access the information while in waiting rooms, on public transport and in work breaks, places where people used to read magazines and read newspapers.
Music magazines usually aim for large age groups, from young adolescence to around 35... examples of this are Q magazine and BillBoard. Some music magazines only aim at adolescence and young adults, an example is Kerrang, this can effect there sales as they do not appeal to older audiences but at the same time can keep there current audience happy and present. A music magazine that aims mainly at a older audience is 'Rock n Roll' magazine.

Music magazine comparison

comparing the colour scheme for both magazines, the top one is very basic. It consists of grey, black and white with a hint of other colours in the letters. Whereas the bottom colour scheme is not clear. It consists of black, red, yellow and white. The top colour scheme I think is more effective, as it brings attention to Lady Gaga. but the bottom brings very little attention towards the image.
The feature stories on the top magazine are more organised and a lot easier to read, it also looks a lot more formal. The feature stories with the bottom magazine are not organised and all over the place, making it less formal but may appeal more to the magazines younger demographic.
Lady Gaga is on the cover of the top magazine, and
You Me At Six is on the cover of the bottom magazine. Both fit the target audience for the magazines and so are both effective, of course Lady Gaga is more famous and has more fans and so is going to sell more magazines.
The font used on both magazines is easy to read and does not over power anything on the magazine.
Overall the top magazine is better, as the magazine itself is more well known to the masses, they have a better colour scheme and a bigger star on the cover... all making it more likely to catch someone's eye.

My school magazine front cover
School magazine front cover evaluation.
The colour scheme I have used is very basic, however this works in the magazines favour as it does not overpower the images. The colour's I have used are red, black and white. My feature titles are relateable to the students and what they want to read, and so i think it works in the magazines favour. The masthead i have used is simple but effective it says 'Read me' across and out of the 'E' it says 'EESF'. I think my magazine front cover would look better if i used more photos, and changed where things are so that it looked fuller and at the same time more formal.
school magazine front cover analysis

- The title of the magazine is wyke although this is unclear as the word exam is also on the top of the page and is in larger font. it is unclear on the page what wyke actually means and so i don't think it is a good title.
- The photo used is of a girl who is at college, it may appeal to the audience as she looks like a stereotypical student who could be doing a number of things. at first glance she looks stressed possibly over exams and at a second there is something in her hand which is not visible, she could be working and the object may be a pen. or the object could be a phone and she could be texting.
- The feature stories are 'is too much stress been put on students?', 'Rose gardens or NO gardens, should they be there or are they just encouraging smoking?' and 'NEW buildings, worth it, or just an unneeded expansion'.
- The colour scheme seems to be Green and White with some black and red. The red seems to clash with the green and the background and the black and white does also not work well with the background.
- the typical things you see on a front cover, is one to 2 photos, the main one usually being of a person. A title, subtitles, a barcode, and the year the magazine is released in.
- The font style they have used is bold and rounded.

- The title of the magazine is school weekly, not very inventive...
- The photo used is of a girl carrying school books and a bag looking like she is on her way to school.
- the feature stories are 'Every year 11 pupil GCSE grades published', 'Exclusive pictures of year 11 prom' which includes 3 photos of the prom on the front cover and 'Stressing about exams'
- there is no real colour scheme. The background colour is off white, the title is in red one of the feature stories is in blue and the other 2 are also in red, all other writing including the title is in blue. This does not work in the magazines favour as nothing on the cover really stands out.
- the font style they have used is plain, which works on the magazine as it is easier to read.
- The title of the magazine is 'Monkey' and the slogan is 'GO BANANA'S' this is random and eye catching which means you are more likely to have a look at it and buy it.
- The main photo used is of a girl holding a banana giving a weird face, which makes it look childish but at the same time funny.
- The feature story is 'Are you being bullied?' with a photo of someone who looks lonely and as if he is being bullied. there is no other feature story but instead a paragraph that explains the magazine, 'read inside to get a taste of you weekly gossip, don't stay behind, get with it... get a glimpse of the coming student parties'
- The colour scheme is yellow and black, although the background behind the girl is of a brick wall which does not work in the covers favour. the tile is yellow the banana is yellow and her cardigan is yellow.
- The font style they have used is large rounded and in capitals, it works on the magazine as it really stands out.
