Images chosen for my magazine

The images I have chosen to use are basic and not overpowering, the pose in the top picture is effective for the front cover as it is showing him thinking, as he has just made an album which involved a lot of work, by looking at the camera it makes it more personal to the audience by connecting to them more. The middle photo was for the contents page, he looks as if he is looking at something while thinking, on the contents page I have placed the image so it looks like he is staring at the contents on the contents page. In the last image he is staring at the camera, almost looking at the audience.. for the interview this works as it looks like he is talking to the audience directly. The outfit he is wearing is basic but still looks alternative. His t-shirt is geeky which makes him more relateable to a large audience in the Indie/alternative genre, the brightness in the purple also adds a bit of a boldness to the image. The checkered shirt is plain and does not have any bright colours as to not overpower the t-shirt underneath, but it still works with the t-shirt as it looks tattered a bit like it is worn out, which makes it look like he has not put too much effort into his costume... this to a alternative/indie audience makes him more relaxed.

contents page analysis 3.

This contents page is the best of the three. Although it does not look as formal and well laid out as the other 2, it has far more information, uses a lot more types of fonts and more photos, without looking overpowering. They have used a different type of font for the title and then for the smaller writing, as well as the smaller writing having 2 different types of fonts depending on how important the information is. The 4 pictures they have used all have a page number on them and so if what you were originally searching for catches your eyes you don't have to waste time, also if you want more information on the 4 photos then they are also in the main information of the contents page. The colour scheme they have used is basic, all the writing and background colour's are in black, white and red... This works as it means nothing is overpowered, if you were to use to many colour's to type then it can become a blur. The amount of information on the page shows me that almost everything on the magazine is going to be mentioned on the page and so I can find everything out, unlike the last contents page I analysed which lacked in information for the magazine.

Contents page analysis 2.

The photo takes up most of the page on this contents page, the page looks good and it is well laid out, however there is nowhere near enough information on the page about the contents of the magazine, instead they have decided to focus on the artist. The types of font they have used are well placed and varied, the idea of having the contents page across 3 lines however is not necessary as it does not add anything to the page and just means there is less space for the actual contents. They have gone for a black and white colour theme with a hint of red where they have placed a heart on the artists chest that is covered by a hand, the black and white theme seems effective on this page as things do stand out, but nothing is overpowered... well except for the lack of contents on the bottom right of the page.

Contents page analysis 1.

The types of fonts they have used are basic but effective. The content of the magazine on the left hand side is clear and simple to read the red is for the page number, the writing in bold gives a very basic idea of the article and then under it is a slightly more specific idea of what its about.
Most of the contents page is taken by a photo of Adele with the page number for her interview on. Although this is good for showing where the main part of the magazine is, it makes it harder to read other things in the magazine because most people will go straight to that page after looking at the contents page for a matter of secons meaning they will not be focusing on the other content.
The colour scheme they have used on the page is very basic and not overpowering, but it makes the magazine look like a newspaper. the background colour consists of two different types of grey and then the headings are bordered with red or black to make them stand out.

Double page spread analysis 3.

This magazine layout is the least effective of the 3. The magazine squishes the title of the artists in the top right hand corner where it is barely seeable. They have not used a wide range of fonts but the ones they have used are very basic, although this would work for a magazine targeting young adults, they have put the whole interview on one page in three columns, looking very overpowering and something most people will not be willing to read. The photo takes up the whole left page and it has a quote on top of it. The photo is very colourful each member has on different colours and the background has a wide range of colours in it. This does not work for the magazine as you are unclear what to focus on, nothing stands out on either page and it just looks messy. What i do like about the interview is that they put the questions in bold, this actually made me go ahead and read them which makes you curious of there answers.

Double page spread analysis 2.

The double spread page interview is inside Q magazine, this is also targeted at young adults aged roughly 16-32. The text they have used in this  double page spread is more varied and it looks better as things stand out more. The double page spread as a whole looks retro due to the creamy background colour and the typing they have used. The interview to the left looks appealing and not overpowering. The whole set out shows the artist in her light as Rihanna is known for being outspoken and a diva, the photo really represents this as she has her hands crossed and is giving a facial expression that shows attitude. One editing technique they have not used is overlapping photos with the text, and other things with the text, This works better for the magazine as nothing is too complex and overpowering unlike in the previous magazine where the large 'L' is over a large proportin of the text.

Double page spread analysis 1

This double page spread is in a magazine targeted at young adults aged roughly 16-32, the double page spread works for its target audience as it is mature but still stands out and looks interesting. They have used a few different fonts. one for 'lady' one for 'gaga' and then the interview is all in font except 2 words which are in large and bold. There is also a large red L on the whole page which puts some colour into the otherwise black and white page. The interview is all to the right and on the left page is a photo of Lady Gaga which takes up the whole page. The problem with this double page spread is the amount of information they try to fit onto the one page, it looks overpowering... you would not want to read it, I would be more inclined to read it they decided to make the photo slightly smaller and split the information across the 2 pages so it did not look so over powering.

2nd draft of the interview.

So first is first, you lost out at the Grammy’s this week, 3 nominations and not a single win, but you seem to be dealing with it well, it was your idea to take the photo we used for this page… do you feel that you lost out?
I don’t mind that I didn’t win a Grammy, I already have one from 2011 and it’s an honour to be nominated. I think you should be able to laugh at things and so the photo we took was great as it shows I can laugh about myself, I think artists who take themselves to seriously aren’t relatable to the audience.

Your new album is being released next week, are you worried you’re going to follow down other artist’s path and not deliver in the second album?
Yes! Over the last year I have made sure the album is perfect as to not upset my fans, I don’t really care about the reviews as long as my fans are happy with it. I’m afraid that my new album wont live up to the first one, but when I think about it, if it’s just half as successful as my last album it would be a massive accomplishment for me.

You recently reached your 10th number 1 in the charts, how did you celebrate?
I remember getting a phone call from Chris Martin congratulating me and I think that was better than actually getting the number 1, just to get a phone call from one of my idols. I celebrated with a bottle of Jack Daniels, my dog and I’m sad to say reality TV.

Now that you’re making a lot of money, what is the most outrageous thing that you like to buy yourself?
I never buy anything too outrageous as I'm quite good with money, however the other day I had too much to drink and ended up buying an teacup pig online, which is weird as you wouldn't assume you could buy animals over the internet. But i've grown fond of him now and called him Galileo.

You have been criticised recently by parents for being a bad role model for your recent incident in Paris, what do you have to say to the parents?
Entertainers are not role models, and they should not be seen like that… It’s not up to me to raise your children, as a new parent I raise my own children, it’s not the media that raises them.

With the recent release of film documentaries by artists such as Katy Perry, Justin Bieber and One Direction would you be tempted in making your own film documentary?
Definitely not! The idea of people following me around my house with cameras makes me feel uncomfortable, why would any one want that? My work life and home life are 2 different things and I want to keep it like that, my kids shouldn’t have to grow up with cameras in their face.

What do you think of Miley Cyrus VMA performance?
Ha, I thought it was funny to watch, I mean I understand what she is doing... she started in the industry as a child and has to try now to keep her career going by changing her audience and image. I think she went to far though, and Robin Thicke is a married man, that must have been awkward the next morning when he talked to his wife.

There’s a rumour that you are collaborating with Coldplay on a new song, can you put the rumours to rest, and how were they to work with?
Well I guess you’ll just have to wait and see, but I can tell you I have seen them live and had the chance to get to know them, and they are some of the most talented people in the industry at the moment.

What is your favourite song on your new album?
My favourite song on the album has to be ‘chicken wings’ I think it really speaks to me and the struggles I went through as a kid. After I was shot at the age of 10 in that gang fight I decided to turn my life around, just like the chicken in the song.

Do you feel like you have learnt from your parent’s mistakes?
Yeah, I hope so. I still worry sometimes that my kids will have to face the same reality that I did, but I have to remind myself

Different fonts for the magazine.

These are some different types of texts that I am testing out for my magazine, I have used the name of my artist to type so I can see what it will look like in the font.

Photo-shoot planning sheet

First photo-shoot

Photoshoot Concept:
the main image for the front cover is going to be a basic pose from my artist, showing shoulders up, this basic effect is good on a front cover as fans of the artist are going to be able to spot it straight away, also many top magazines such as rolling stone and billboard use this and it makes it look more professional and appealing. On the double page spread I am going to highlight the fact he missed out on 3 Grammy nominations by having him lying on the floor trying to grab a Grammy which is just out of reach, an idea which in my interview I will show as his idea which makes him more appealing to the audience because he has a comical side and he doesn’t take himself to seriously.

Aims:

Postproduction I hope to photoshoot the double page spread image to make it black and white and make the artist look rough hopelessly trying to reach the photoshopped in Grammy. With the main image I will Photoshop it but not to a large extent as I want it to stay natural and make sure it is easy for the people looking at the magazine to straight away recognize who it is.

Date & Timings:

My photos will be taken between 14th January and the 24th of January depending on when I can get the necessary equipment.

Location:

For the main image it will be taken in front of the green screen, so I can change the background to something basic and not overpowering, for the double page spread image it will be taken outside on the floor in a run down area, to show he is at rock bottom (literally).

Props:

Just the clothing, which is not to complex as alternative rock/ Indie artists wear very basic clothing.

Models:

Sam Long/ David Clark

Team:

I have no stylist or make up artist but I have a photographer (Luke Woodbridge) to help me take the photos.

Equipment & Preparation:

A DSLR camera needed, make sure its got batter and memory card. I will use a basic 16 to 30 zoom lense as my photos will be in close range and so a larger lense will not be necessary.

Desired Shots (Draw sketches)

For the main image it should be taken straight on and show the shoulders up, for the double page spread image it should show most of the body and head and be taken from the side, low down but above the actually person to show his failure.

1st draft of the musician interview

Now that you're making a lot of money, what is the most outrageous thing that you like to buy yourself?
I'm usually careful when it comes to spending money, but the other day I did go a bit over the top while online shopping while I was drunk, I ended up ordering a tea cup pig.
